A Senior Magistrates’ Court in Abuja has sentenced an 18-year-old student, Christopher Daniel, to 90 days in prison for house breaking and theft. The Senior Magistrate, Mr Zubairu Mohammed, on Thursday sentenced Daniel to 60 days in prison for house breaking and another 30 days for theft. “The convict is hereby sentenced to 60 days in prison for the offence of house breaking with an option of one thousand naira fine. “Daniel is also sentenced to 30 days in prison for the offence of theft and an option of one thousand naira fine,” he said while passing the sentence. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Daniel of Sabon Wuse, Niger State, had earlier pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of house breaking and theft. The magistrate cautioned him to desist from such act in future, adding that the punishment was to serve as a deterrent to others. “I put into consideration the plea of the convict; he admitted committing the offence and did not waste the time of the court.” The Police pr...

Nigeria’s Retrogressive Anti-Gay Law

Image
This past Wednesday, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan elevated crassness and primitiveness to the highest level imaginable by signing into law a bill banning homosexuality in Nigeria.  I deliberately crafted the previous sentence so unambiguously.  He did not just ban homosexual marriage; he banned homosexuality as a whole!  Perhaps if the law had only stopped at "persons who enter into a same-sex marriage contract or civil union commit an offence and are each liable on conviction to a term of 14 years in prison," one might not feel so much outrage.  But it went on to state that "any person who registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organizations or directly or indirectly makes public show of same-sex amorous relationship in Nigeria commits an offence and shall each be liable on conviction to a term of 10 years in prison"!  In essence, only heterosexuals are allowed to hold hands in public, sit on each other’s lap, hump each other while danci...

Pandemonium in Onitsha as violence spreads

Image
There is confusion and chaos in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State, where some youths have gone on the rampage in reaction to the alleged killing of a traffic personnel by occupants of an articulated vehicle. The part of Onitsha affected by this violence is the Upper Iweka – Headbridge axis. Reports had it that the traffic personnel of the Anambra State Transport Agency had jumped into the articulated vehicle at Ihiala, 65km away, for checks. But the driver had zoomed off with him. They were however stopped at the Onitsha headbridge where the traffic officer was alleged to have been found dead in the vehicle. In another part of the city, traders of the Mgbuka Market blocked the Onithsa-Owerri expressway to protest the alleged high-handedness of their leaders. They said their market has not been opened since they returned from the Christmas break. Though the police and army have deployed their men to take charge of the situation, many people, particularly those from north...

PDP chieftain warns politicians against use of religious sentiments

Image
Alhaji Ahmed Gusau, former Minister of Solid Minerals, on Tuesday advised against the use of religious sentiments in the run up to the 2015 general elections. Gusau, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), gave the advice at a news conference in Sokoto on Tuesday. He said, “what is important for Nigerians is to put the Nigerian agenda forward and collectively and logically pursue it. “The time has therefore come for all Nigerians to combine forces for the development of the country; otherwise, we are wasting our time’’, Gusau said. The former minister stressed that “God in His mercy decided to make Nigeria what it is today and there is no way anybody can change history. “We are Nigerians; we have experienced a transition of more than 15 years under democracy. “It is about time to grow up and set our sentiments aside. Let us now graduate as democrats. I think it is about time to agree that we are matured politically.’’ Gusau called for free, fair and peaceful elections in t...
