PDP chieftain warns politicians against use of religious sentiments

Alhaji Ahmed Gusau, former Minister of Solid Minerals, on Tuesday advised against the use of religious sentiments in the run up to the 2015 general elections.Gusau, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), gave the advice at a news conference in Sokoto on Tuesday. He said, “what is important for Nigerians is to put the Nigerian agenda forward and collectively and logically pursue it.“The time has therefore come for all Nigerians to combine forces for the development of the country; otherwise, we are wasting our time’’, Gusau said. The former minister stressed that “God in His mercy decided to make Nigeria what it is today and there is no way anybody can change history.“We are Nigerians; we have experienced a transition of more than 15 years under democracy.“It is about time to grow up and set our sentiments aside. Let us now graduate as democrats. I think it is about time to agree that we are matured politically.’’Gusau called for free, fair and peaceful elections in the country before and after 2015.He held that it was only with the success of future elections that Nigerians could really reap the benefits of democracy. The PDP stalwart said the country needed harmony to forge ahead and cautioned those unnecessarily heating up the polity.“We are wasting a whole lot of time arguing, fighting, blackmailing and making unnecessary comments instead of examining the successes of democracy.’’
