Monster storm roars into Philippines

Image
A satellite image as the typhoon approached the Philippines on Friday One of the strongest typhoons ever to hit land has slammed the Philippines, forcing millions to take shelter. Packing sustained winds of up to 320 km/h (199mph), Typhoon Haiyan left at least three people dead, but it may be days before the full damage is known. The storm ripped apart buildings and triggered landslides as it ploughed across the country's central islands. Officials said more than 12 million people were at risk, but the storm's rapid passing could limit its impact. "We expect the level of destruction caused by Typhoon Haiyan to be extensive and devastating, and sadly we fear that many lives will be lost," said Save the Children's Philippines director Anna Lindenfors. Tens of thousands of people in low-lying areas were evacuated Eduardo del Rosario, head of the disaster response agency, told the Associated Press that early evacuations and the speed at which the typhoon ...

Golden Eaglets conquered the world

Image
Nigeria Golden Eaglets became the most successful team in FIFA U-17 World Cup history with a 3-0 win over holders Mexico at the Mohammad Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The final was a rematch of the 6-1 win Nigeria inflicted on the Mexicans in Group F play and sees the Golden Eaglets lay hands on the junior world trophy for the fourth time in their history, one better than South American giants Brazil. When the final whistle went in the UAE capital, fans and players alike rejoiced, fingers pointed to the sky, with what has become the traditional Nigerian celebration of: “yes, yes yes! Mexico kept the ball for a full two minutes at the start of the game, moving it around well and making the Nigerians chase. El Tri even managed the first chance on goal after six minutes. Osvaldo Rodriguez crossed from the left, but Alejandro Diaz couldn’t keep his close-range effort the right side of the post. Two minutes on and Ivan Ochoa – who scored twice in the semi-final win over Argentin...

John Kerry changes plans to join Iran nuclear talks

Image
US Secretary of State John Kerry is to fly to join negotiations in Geneva on Iran's nuclear programme, amid rising expectation of a breakthrough. Mr Kerry had been on a tour of the Middle East, but changed his plans at the invitation of the EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton. Iran's foreign minister said a deal could be reached on Friday. The talks bring together world powers - the five permanent Security Council members plus Germany (P5+1) - and Iran. The BBC's Kim Ghattas, who is travelling with Mr Kerry, says his dramatic decision to change his travel plans and go to Geneva is a clear sign that a deal with Iran may be within reach. A senior state department official told the BBC that he was going "to help narrow differences in negotiations" between Iran and the 5P+1. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told CNN on Thursday that Iran would not suspend uranium enrichment completely but could "deal with the various issues on the table"...

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford in video murder rant

Image
Embattled Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has apologised for a video of him making threats to commit "first-degree murder" against an unknown person. The leader of Canada's biggest city told reporters he had been "extremely inebriated" in the clip, which shows him apparently blowing off steam. It is the latest video controversy to engulf the mayor, who admitted this week having smoked crack cocaine. Councillors are stepping up their calls for Mr Ford, 44, to resign. 'Extremely embarrassing' The latest footage looks as though it was secretly filmed on a mobile phone. Robyn Doolittle, the Toronto Star reporter who has been on the story, told CNN the video appeared to have been shot over the summer, based on the context of some of the dialogue. In the clip, an agitated Mr Ford paces a room gesticulating during a foul-mouthed rant. The context of the clip is not clear, nor is the target of Mr Ford's wrath. He vows to rip out the person's throat, poke out ...

House Of Reps Aviation Committee Dismisses All Claims By Stella Oduah

Image
The House of Representatives Committee on Aviation has concluded that Mrs. Stella Oduah, the Minister, is a serial liar. In a report on its investigation obtained by SaharaReporters, the committee dismissed every single claim the Minister made during her testimony to the committee earlier in the week concerning the purchase of two bulletproof cars for her by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). It stressed there was no appropriation for the purchase of the two armoured cars, and stressed that the NCAA proposal for the purchase of the two MBW armoured cars was rejected. “There was no provision for armoured vehicle in Nigerian law for a minister in any event, any procurement for an armoured vehicle must be provided for in the appropriation act and backed by relevant approval,” the report said. The committee also noted that the Minister and the Director-General of the NCAA claimed that both vehicles were purchased under a lease agreement with First Bank plc. “The assertio...

Two women, who claimed to be prophetesses, but allegedly defrauded a businesswoman of N600, 000, yesterday, appeared before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. The police charged Ifeoma Ogbonna, 43, and Uchechi Nwosu, 40, with defrauding Mrs Jane Chukwu in the guise of using divine powers to enrich her. Ogbonna and Nwosu, who live in the Orile-Iganmu area of Lagos, are facing a three-count charge of stealing, conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretences. The prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Inedu, told the court that the accused approached Chukwu and asked her to bring N500,000 and her gold necklace worth N100,000 to enable them to pray for her to become rich. “The accused, who lured the businesswoman to a reclusive area on Coker Bridge, Orile-Iganmu, Lagos, promised to pray for her and neutralise all forces working against her progress. “The accused said that they would use the money to buy some spiritual oil and other things for the prayer. “The businesswoman, who could not see ...
