Man, 49, in court for destroying palm trees

For allegedly destroying 10 palm trees on a land and threatening the owner’s life, a 49-year-old man, Babatunde Talabi, on Thursday appeared before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun. Talabi, whose address is unknown, is facing a three-count charge of malicious damage, threat to life and conspiracy The Prosecutor, Insp Olajide Michael, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Nov. 27, 2013 at about 11.45 am at Okiki Village, near Atan, Ota. The prosecutor said the accused, and others now at large, maliciously damaged 10 palm trees valued at N100,000 on the land of one Mr Lasisi Abolade. Michael said the offences committed contravened Sections 86 (1), 451 and 516 of the Criminal Code Law of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. Section 451 prescribes a penalty of two years imprisonment for malicious damage to property. Lagos police nab 6 church offering robbers

LAGOS — Six members of a notorious robbery gang that has been terrorizing residents of Ajangbadi, Ilogbo and Ijanikin areas of Lagos State are currently cooling off  in the dreaded cells of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja. The suspects identified as Adewale Osoja, 21; Bala Yahaya, 28; Hasan Ado, 19; Ahmed Boladale, 20; Abiodun Olareaju 27 and Abbey Edward, 45, were said to have met their waterloo after they  attacked worshippers  at  Christ Authority and Power Evangelical Ministry, CAPEM, Vespa, Ijanikin, Lagos-Badagry Expressway, during a crossover night vigil on December 31, 2013. Official confirms payment of severance package to ex-PHCN workers

The Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies on Thursday said that the remaining disengaged electricity workers had started receiving their severance package. The President General of the association, Mr Bede Opara, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that members of the association had been receiving the payment alerts from Monday. “The issue of few workers collecting this week and the others waiting for another two months should be out of it. “Federal Government should urge the Bureau of Public Enterprises and the Accountant General to fast track the remaining payments. “The situation of the payment will determine if the disengaged electricity workers will protest next month or not,” he said. The president general said that the association would continue to fight until the last disengaged worker received his money.
