Man, 49, in court for destroying palm trees

For allegedly destroying 10 palm trees on a land and threatening the owner’s life, a 49-year-old man, Babatunde Talabi, on Thursday appeared before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun.Talabi, whose address is unknown, is facing a three-count charge of malicious damage, threat to life and conspiracyThe Prosecutor, Insp Olajide Michael, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Nov. 27, 2013 at about 11.45 am at Okiki Village, near Atan, Ota.The prosecutor said the accused, and others now at large, maliciously damaged 10 palm trees valued at N100,000 on the land of one Mr Lasisi Abolade.Michael said the offences committed contravened Sections 86 (1), 451 and 516 of the Criminal Code Law of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.Section 451 prescribes a penalty of two years imprisonment for malicious damage to property.The Magistrate, Mrs Titi Bello, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.Bello said that the surety must show evidence of gainful employment and payment of tax to the Ogun State Government, as part of the bail conditions.She said that the surety must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction and the address should be verified by the police.The case was adjourned till Feb. 24, for mention.
