Image
BY: Funmi Ojuroye  25th Sept. 2013 Udeh The Nigerian Immigration Service, Lagos State Command, has arrested a 48-year-old man, Nick Udeh, for posing as a journalist and presenting fake documents to seek favors from the Comptroller of the command, Mr. Julius Ogbu. According to the immigration authorities, the suspect and others at large posed as employees of Newswatch Magazine and other media houses and wrote a letter to the comptroller requesting a meeting with him. The bubble, however, burst last Friday when the comptroller referred the suspect to the command’s public relations officer, Muyiwa Odunubi. Unknown to the suspect, calls had been made to management of the media house in question, including his scanned photograph, where it was discovered he had never been an employee of the company. While speaking with PUNCH Metro at the command headquarters in Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, Lagos, the suspect, who claimed in the letter to the officer that they came fr...

BY: Funmi Ojuroye  25th Sept. 2013 Three yet-to-be identified policemen lost their lives when a group of armed men attacked a hotel at Araromi bus stop along the Igando-Iba Highway. The policemen, attached to the Igando Police Division, were reportedly taken by surprise, when the robbers stormed the hotel about 2 A.m, on Saturday, September 21. Sources at Taiwo Alonge Street, where the hotel is situated, told PUNCH Metro that residents were interrupted from their sleep by the sound of gunfire in the middle of the night. She said, “The hotel is a busy one. Last Friday, the situation was not different. Business went on till late into the night. “Since this hotel began operating, there have always been at least three policemen guarding the place at night. Although the hotel has its own security, the policemen supervised them.” MICBLOG gathered that the robbers, numbering about 10, had initially driven up to the hotel under the guise of being guests. Anambra 2013: For Votes To Count

Image
BY: FUNMI OJUROYE  25th Sept. 2013 ANAMBRA State has managed to be on the amazing side of politics. It seems to have an unceasing affinity to bizarre political offerings. From being the only State where a governor has been abducted, and his known abductors remain political lords, to the organised arson that left most of Awka in ruins – again it was unpunished – Anambra descends to further complications at election seasons. Since, 2003, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has had two lists of candidates, authentic and factional, for any election. The other parties are copying the practice that rubbishes voters’ choices. Legal decisions and disqualifications can nullify voters’ choices. As in the past, candidates would campaign vigorously to be elected for a post, if he wins, another person would be sworn-in, the rival candidate could utilise legal channels to claim the seat. In a pattern that usually appears questionable, the litigation is concluded after the results of the p...

Woman rescued from drowning over N500

Image
BY: FUNMI OJUROYE  25th Sept. 2013 There was pandemonium, yesterday, in Awka when a middle-aged woman escaped death at Ezu River, where over 23 mystery corpses were found few months ago. The woman, Ms. Peace Nnabuife, from Ezeoye, Nibo in Awka South Local Government of the state, had entered the river on a “spiritual journey” when she suddenly slipped and almost drowned. Some young men, using canoe, were said to have gone to the river bank to perform some sacrifices when they saw the drowning woman and helped her. They were leaving when her N500 fell into the river. She went for the money and got swept off by the river. Roots of trees were said to have stopped her from being taken away by the river. She said: “I came here so that Ezu River will carry me to Nibo. We travel through rivers to our meeting place in the depth of the river, where our queen’s kingdom is. “I came with cellophane bag and I had N500 in it. The N500 fell into the river as the water carried me.” Asked whe...
