Two million monitoring Internet in China

Image
BY: FUNMI OJUROYE  October 5th 2013 China is employing two million people to keep tabs on people’s Internet use, according to state media, in a rare glimpse into the secret world of Beijing’s vast online surveillance operation. Many of the employees are simply performing keyword searches to monitor the tens of millions of messages being posted daily on popular social media and micro blogging sites, the Beijing News said. The exact number of people employed to trawl through the Internet in a bid to prevent social unrest and limit criticism of the ruling Community party has long been the subject of speculation. The “web police” are employed by the government’s propaganda arm, as well as by commercial sites, the Beijing News said. It said that despite their large number, the monitors are not always able to prevent comments that are deemed by the government to be undesirable from being published and re-posted. China’s censorship authorities tightly control online conten...

This APC will give Nigeria migraine

Image
BY: FUNMI OJUROYE  October 5th 2013 There is so much fuss about the capability of the newly registered All Progressives Congress (APC) to sort out the mess into which the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has plunged the country since her return to democratic rule in 1999. The promoters of the party say APC is the panacea for the nation’s protracted and seemingly intractable political quagmire. They are telling us that the party has got the magic wand to take us to the much desired socio-economic and political Promised Land. What gives them the impression that they have the capacity to tackle the myriad of woes staring us in the face? What is unique about APC? Is it any different from PDP?  For me, APC is old wine in a new bottle. Considering the antecedents of the three parties that fused into the so-called mega party, I have no scintilla of doubt in my mind that APC will go down in history as the worst political party to have emerged on the nation’s political landscape....

Kenya Mall Attack: CCTV footage of gunmen released

Image
BY: FUNMI OJUROYE  October 5th 2013 With chilling nonchalance, gunmen who massacred at least 67 people wander through Kenya’s West gate mall, seen for the first time in security camera footage providing possible vital evidence to investigators. Calmly searching corners of the mall — possibly hunting for more victims to kill after executing scores in the main hall of the upmarket complex — the closed-circuit television footage shows four young men ambling around with AK-47 rifles in hand. Witnesses in the mall described how the fighters stormed the complex midday Saturday when it was crowded with shoppers, firing from the hip and hurling grenades at shoppers and staff. But hours after the attack started, the men are seen in the bread section of the supermarket, the bulk of their victims most likely already dead. They wear backpacks, perhaps stuffed with the ammunition that they would use to keep Kenya’s army — backed by foreign special forces — at bay for four days. Two w...
