Gay marriage legislation: A great reflection of the UK today

By  F unmi Ojuroye   Thursday 18 Jul 2013 8:51 am Gay marriage campaigners celebrate the decision (Picture: AFP/Getty) As MPs greeted John Bercow’s announcement that the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill had been granted Royal Assent with cheers, I very quickly found myself doing the same thing. Granted this bill only relates to English and Welsh law, but I sincerely hope that the devolved parliament in my birthplace of Scotland and the national Assembly in Northern Ireland quickly follow suit. I swiftly checked out the response to the news after it had been posted on  Metro’s Facebook page . As I write, more than 1,300 people have ‘liked’ the story with the vast majority of feedback to the historic news being overwhelmingly positive and supportive, irrespective of commenters’ sexual orientation. As the Queen added her formal approval to the bill, many were commenting about this being one of the most important pieces of social legislation of her 60 year reign. ...
