BY: FUNMI OJUROYE It was a miracle that baffled many eyewitnesses.  Given the number of vehicles involved in the accident, many had expected a high death toll. But alas, except for the few who were injured, nobody died when at least nine cars were involved yesterday in a multiple collision on the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Expressway in Warri, Delta State. The incident occurred at about 1pm at a roadblock manned by soldiers involved in special security surveillance in the oil-city, eyewitnesses told THISDAY. Although most of the vehicles involved in the accident were badly damaged, none of the about 45 persons in the nine vehicles was killed. But some occupants of the vehicles who sustained injuries were rushed to undisclosed hospitals. BY: FUNMI OJUROYE The police in Ondo State has confirmed the arrest of some of its men over the killing at the weekend of an Edo-born truck driver, identified as Friday Igbinedion. The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Wole Ogodo, confirmed this to SaharaReporters while responding to allegations that the command was planning to bury the case and transfer the killer cops to another state before human rights groups in the state petitioned the Inspector General Police. Igbinedion, according to sources, was allegedly shot dead by trigger-happy police officers at a checkpoint on the Ore/Benin road midday on Friday. An eyewitness told SaharaReporters that the driver was driving an unregistered truck when he was stopped at the police checkpoint in Ore around 12: 35 pm. “The driver was coming from Lagos with his unregistered truck when some policemen stopped him at a checkpoint. At the point of asking his vehicle plate number an argument ensued and the next thing we hear...

Why blame Fashola?

Image
AUGUST 12, 2013  BY DAUDA LUKMAN What’s the noise about deportation? I think people should stop tribalising issues and condemning the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola. Instead, the Igbo should hold their governors accountable in providing infrastructure and conducive atmosphere for their states so as to stop the exodus of their people to other parts of the country. Their leaders are crying foul when other regions are trying to develop their states. Governor Fashola should continue his good work, Lagosians are solidly behind him. Sow Nothing, Reap Nothing

BY: FUNMI OJUROYE HOW will Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State address the parlous result of the State’s primary schools audit? The solutions would be more challenging than the report. Anyone who is aware of the neglect of primary school education would have expected the report which reflects a nationwide decay. Many States give no thought to the morass in primary school education. Their officials could be among those expressing surprise about Edo State schools. Summaries of the findings are - Only 1,304 or 9 per cent of the State’s 14,484 teachers have accurate records 91 per cent 0r 13, 180 teachers have various forms of discrepancies in their records 1,379 teachers were employed without primary school certificates Some teachers got primary school certificates only about two years ago In some cases, they obtained the certificates while teaching in the same schools 789 teachers had primary school certificates before the age of 8 or 9 Years of consignin...
