Clashes Continue as Egypt's Interim President Urges Reconciliation

by Funmi Ojuroye  July 23, 2013 Clashes in Egypt have continued early Tuesday, despite a plea from the country's interim president urging people to remain calm and abstain from violence. Supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi were involved in fighting Tuesday near Cairo University's main campus in Giza, where police broke up the violence. Hours earlier, Interim President Adly Mansour spoke on state television, telling Egyptians that reconciliation is necessary for the country to move forward. Clashes Monday between supporters and opponents of Mr. Morsi left four people dead and dozens more wounded. Security officials said Monday's fighting started with stone-throwing when a group of Morsi supporters passed near Tahrir Square during a protest march. From FUNMI OJUROYE •Stakeholders meet, seek peace Southern Senatorial Zone of Plateau State stakeholders yesterday met to deliberate on how to end the recurring violence in the area. The Southern senatorial zone consists of Wase, Langtang South, Langtang North, Quanpan, Mikang and Shendam local government areas. The meeting was called at the instance of the Special Task Force (STF) on Jos crisis following recurring attacks by gunmen on the six local government areas. Shortly after the STF Commander, Maj-Gen. Henry Ayoola, rose to speak, there was report that over 500 cattle were rustled in Longvel community in Shendam Local Government Area of the state. It was learnt that about 100 armed men allegedly stormed the community, killing one person as they made away with 500 cattle. An eye witness, who did not want his name mentioned, told journalists that the armed rustlers shot sporadically into the air in order to scare people away before carrying out their nefarious act. Tragedy: 18 people including 2 children die in road accident on Benin-Ore Expressway

Posted by MIC BLOG  on July 23, 2013 7:11 am by Rachel Ogbu 18 people have died in a road accident involving a truck and a Peace Mass Transit commercial bus at Okada along the Benin-Ore-Lagos expressway. The tragedy which occurred Monday afternoon had claimed the lives of two children. According to sources, the truck loaded with gravel lost a tyre and collided with the Peace Mass Transit bus which was travelling from Onitsha to Lagos. It is believed that fuel began to spill from the bus and before passengers could get out, the bus went up in flames. Hundreds of passengers on the expressway were stranded for several hours afterwards as rescue officials arrived the scene to handle the situation.

Those dead in the Edo  auto crash included two children, 15 adults and a motor-boy of a heavy duty truck. The accident caused heavy gridlock on the expressway, as it happened on a one-way lane while construction work was ongoing on the other lane. The accident involved a heavy Mark truck loaded with gravel and a commercial Toyota bus belonging to Peace Mass Transit Company Limited. Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Kenneth Nwaegbe, confirmed the accident in a chat, but said many children who survived the accident had been taken to the hospital for treatment. Eyewitnesses account has it that the student carrying placard barricaded Ikorodu Road at Onipan area bemoaning their fate as they have been compelled to, yet again, sit at home due to the strike actions embarked upon by the lecturers.

Child marriage: Ondo senator weeps, claims voting in error

by FUNMI OJUROYE Themember representing Ondo Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Ayo Akinyelure, wept before members of his constituency in Akure on Monday as he apologised to them that he voted in error to support the senate resolution backing marriage of underage girls. Akinyelure was summoned by his constituents to explain his role in the controversial passage of a resolution to retain the provision of Section 29 (4) (b) of the 1999 Constitution, which states that a married underage girl is deemed to be an adult. Politicians, women groups and students had besieged the Adegbemile Hall, venue of the meeting, with placards to protest against what they described as the legalisation of sexual abuse of young girls, which their representative had supported.
