We’re treated like slaves but we’re afraid of losing our jobs –Nigerians in Chinese, Indian companies

Image
Ade Abbas (not real name) looked furtively around before he spoke. It was clear he was afraid. He was afraid like many other factory workers, who simply walked away when our correspondent approached them to inquire about working conditions in their places of work. They did not want to get fired. The condition in the country has taught these youths to be thankful for their situation and count themselves fortunate to be employed, no matter how terrible the working condition in their places of work is. Some of them told our correspondent that they were aware that their case was ‘voluntary slavery;’ but said they had become powerless as a result of the economic hardship in the country. “I don’t want to lose my job please, I cannot lose this job. My wife is pregnant. The survival of my family and I depends on the N15,000 I earn here per month,” Abbas said. He tried to explain the reason why he had to be vigilant as he met with our correspondent some distance away from one of the factori...

Pastors, wives open up on sex life

Image
Toyin-Kehinde and Adewale You see him on Sunday morning well dressed in his three piece suit and looking freshly anointed. The picture you see is that of a cherub, who has just arrived from the heavens with a message for the people and would be back there soon after. Once he starts to preach, the congregation is overwhelmed with the awe he exudes. Because this is all they know about him, some followers believe that is all about the pastor. Ask some Christians and they will bet their life savings that their pastors have never visited the toilet, not to talk of having sex. Where on earth do they have the time for such things, they seem to assert in illusion. They base their judgement on the fact that usually, a pastor is seen praying, preaching or counselling; so the average congregant believes he must be a super being, who never answers to any call of nature – especially sex. The pastor is perhaps the most misunderstood and over-rated being on earth today. He is rated as a semi-go...

Violent protests rock Bosnia

Bosnia Demonstrators in Bosnia-Hercegovina have set fire to government buildings, in the worst unrest since the end of the 1992-95 war. Hundreds of people have been injured in three days of protests over high unemployment and perceived inability of politicians to improve the situation. Police used rubber bullets and tear gas to quell unrest in the capital Sarajevo and the northern town of Tuzla. Black smoke could be seen coming from the presidency building in Sarajevo. In Bosnia the legacies of the war mean that few even hope for change anymore. For this reason, anger has been simmering for years, but now it has boiled over” Sarajevo-based newspaper Dnevni Avaz says police used water to disperse the protesters who were throwing stones at the building. There were also reports of an attempted storming of the office. The fire brigade are unable to reach the burning building, the paper reports. A total of 13 fire service teams have been deployed. On Thursday, clashes between police...
