Vote against LG autonomy, ACN tells lawmakers
раскрутка сайтоAS the House of Representatives kick-start debate and voting on the recommendations of its ad hoc committee on Constitution Review, strong indication has emerged of a directive from the leadership of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to its lawmakers to vote against autonomy for local governments.
This is coming just as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members, jolted by the directive from the ACN leadership to its members, scheduled a meeting for 9.00 p.m on Monday, to brainstorm on the ongoing constitution amendment process.
Sources told the Nigerian Tribune in Abuja that the national leadership of ACN had directed all its members to vote against some key items in the recommendations in the constitution amendment, especially the aspect that sought to recognise local government as third tier of government, so that it could enjoy financial autonomy.
When contacted, the minority leader of the House, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, a member of ACN, said “ACN is a progressive party and we intend to act in the best interest of our constituents and Nigeria as we have always done on all issues.”
Another ACN member told the Nigeria Tribune in confidence that “the directive is real.”
The House had also already concluded plan to use electronic voting system during voting on the new constitution process, while the leadership had reportedly plan to release result of the vote to show how individual lawmaker voted.
A source close to the House leadership told the Nigerian Tribune in confidence that a closed-door session would be held before the voting process to teach members how to use the electronic voting system, which was test run on Monday by the speaker of the House, Honourable Aminu Tambuwal and some lawmakers.
In a related development, chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Honourable Zakari Mohammed, in a statement issued in Abuja, on Tuesday, said “the debate and voting of the constitutional amendment starts tomorrow (today) by 10.00 a.m. The electronic option would be adopted.
The statement said the process would be aired live on state television.
