The protesters hemmed-in six members of the state working committee of the party, including  its Deputy Chairman, Mr Femi Bamisile and the Legal Adviser, Mr Kola Adefemi, who were said to have been in a meeting at the party’s secretariat, and held them hostage for several hours.

The protesters demanded that the state working committee of the  PDP in Ekiti State should rescind its decision to select the party’s candidate through consensus, saying “anything outside a credible, free and fair primaries is unacceptable to the youth wing of the party and the grassroots.”

Spokesman for the protesters, Mr Akinniyi Sunday, a former secretary of the party in Ikere Local Government Area, claimed that the elders and youths of party in the state “have rejected consensus in its entirety because it cannot produce a credible candidate that can dislodge the incumbent governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi.”

He said: “We want a candidate that can win election. Candidate that is popular among the grassroots and the masses. We are being guided by history. Where PDP did not do primaries, we lost and we don’t want such to happen in Ekiti and that is why we are requesting for primaries and anything outside this is unacceptable.”

Men of the Swift Response Squad of the state police command led by  DSP Segun Atanda and ASP Victor Olotin, were deployed at the party secretariat to fore tall a recurrence of last week Tuesday’s invasion of the secretariat by thugs, who beat up members of the party and journalists who were invited there for a press conference.
