Court sentences student to 90 days in prison for burglary, theft

A Senior Magistrates’ Court in Abuja has sentenced an 18-year-old student, Christopher Daniel, to 90 days in prison for house breaking and theft.
The Senior Magistrate, Mr Zubairu Mohammed, on Thursday sentenced Daniel to 60 days in prison for house breaking and another 30 days for theft.
“The convict is hereby sentenced to 60 days in prison for the offence of house breaking with an option of one thousand naira fine.
“Daniel is also sentenced to 30 days in prison for the offence of theft and an option of one thousand naira fine,” he said while passing the sentence.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Daniel of Sabon Wuse, Niger State, had earlier pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of house breaking and theft.
The magistrate cautioned him to desist from such act in future, adding that the punishment was to serve as a deterrent to others.
“I put into consideration the plea of the convict; he admitted committing the offence and did not waste the time of the court.”
The Police prosecutor, Sgt. Salihu Mohammed, had told the court that one Ahmed Shehu of A.L.D Estate, Gwarinpa, Abuja, lodged the complaint against the convict at the Gwarinpa Police Station on Dec. 26, 2013.
Salihu said that the convict burgled the house of the complainant and stole a Samsung Laptop computer, two hard discs, and a 21-inch flat screen plasma television.
The prosecutor said the convict was apprehended by the police while about to escape with the stolen items.
