Keep ethno-religious sentiment away from politics – Alkali

Alkali

Prof. Rufai Alkali, Special Adviser (SA) to the President on Political Matters, has urged politicians not to campaign along religious line in order to get voters’ support.
He said this in Abuja on Tuesday, at a Political Summit organised by Southern and Northern Amalgamated Support for Predsident Goodluck Jonathan.
According to Alkali, ethnic and religious differences should not be seen as basis for voting a candidate into office and nobody should see them as tools for campaigning for vote.
“Politicians should campaign based on candidates’ integrity and achievements so that the nation would continue to develop.
“Nigeria is a secular state and for that reason, it will not be fair for anyone to campaign along religious or ethnic line for elective offices”, Alkali said.
He, therefore, commended President Jonathan for creating atmosphere conducive for opposition to thrive in the political landscape of the country.
He also urged the group members and the electorate in general to follow the electoral process like registering and procuring their voter cards at the appropriate time.
The SA to President Jonathan on Ethics and Values, Mrs Sarah Jibrin urged the youths to contribute positively to the development of the nation.
Mr Emmanuel Okpongete, Global Coordinator of the group said there was need for proper education of the electorate ahead of the coming elections.
He pledged the group’s support for the president to go for re-election. (NAN)
