India doctors remove 232 teeth from boy’s mouth

Image
Doctors in India have extracted 232 teeth from the mouth of a 17-year-old boy in a seven-hour operation. Ashik Gavai was brought in with a swelling in his right jaw, Dr Sunanda Dhiware, head of Mumbai’s JJ Hospital’s dental department, told the BBC. The teenager had been suffering for 18 months and travelled to the city from his village after local doctors failed to identify the cause of the problem. Doctors have described his condition as “very rare” and “a world record”. “Ashik’s malaise was diagnosed as a complex composite odontoma where a single gum forms lots of teeth. It’s a sort of benign tumour,” Dr Dhiware said. “At first, we couldn’t cut it out so we had to use the basic chisel and hammer to take it out. “Once we opened it, little pearl-like teeth started coming out, one-by-one. Initially, we were collecting them, they were really like small white pearls. But then we started to get tired. We counted 232 teeth,” she added. The surgery, conducted on Monday, involved two sur...

CAR factions announce ceasefire

Image
Representatives from the Seleka (l) and the anti-Balaka signed the agreement Rival armed groups in the Central African Republic have signed a ceasefire agreement aimed at ending over a year of religious conflict. The agreement was signed in Congo between Muslim Seleka rebels and the Christian anti-Balaka militia. As part of the deal, the Seleka dropped their demand for CAR’s partition. Thousands of people have been killed and almost a quarter of the country’s 4.6 million inhabitants have been forced from their homes. Muslims have been forced to flee the capital city and most of the west of the country, in what rights groups described as ethnic cleansing. Both sides have been accused of war crimes such as torture and unlawful killing. The negotiations began in the Congolese capital of Brazzaville on Monday. “We have signed this ceasefire agreement today in front of everyone. Our commitment is firm and irreversible” said Mohamed Moussa Dhaffane, who headed the Seleka delegation. Pa...

Security operatives harass Ezekwesili at airport

Image
Oby Ezekwesili Operatives of the Department of State Security this morning seized the international passport of the Coordinator of the BringBackOurGirls group and former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. Ezekwesili was on her way to London when her passport was confiscated by the security operatives and she was prevented from boarding her flight. Her passport was however released to her about 30 minutes later and the BBOG campaigner was allowed to board the plane. A BBOG spokesperson, Rotimi Olawale, confirmed to our correspondent that Ezekwesili’s traveling document was seized by security operatives and later released to her. He said, “Oby’s passport was seized by security operatives at the Nnamdi International Airport, Abuja for about 30 minutes and she was prevented from boarding her plane, but she has now been released and she is on her way to London for her engagement.” Ezekwesili later tweeted to her followers that sh...

Australia teenager behind Iraq blast

Image
Australia says a man who killed himself and several other people in a suicide attack in Iraq last week was an 18-year-old from Melbourne. The attack took place in a market near a Baghdad mosque on Thursday. The man detonated explosives in a suicide vest, killing at least three other people and injuring dozens more. The Islamic State militant group, in an affiliated Twitter feed, said it was behind the attack and named the man as Abu Bakr al-Australi. Australia’s Attorney-General George Brandis, in a statement, said the news was a “disturbing development”. “The government deplores the violent actions being undertaken by ISIL and other extremist groups in Iraq and Syria, and is deeply concerned about the involvement of Australians in these activities.” The involvement of Australians posed “a significant domestic security threat to Australia when those involved return home and seek to pursue violence here”. The man was the second Australian suicide bomber in the Iraq and Syria conflic...

Timaya: Empress Njamah at war again?

Image
Timaya Once, Bayelsa State-born music artiste, Timaya and actress Empress Njamah were talk of the town on account of the love they presumably had for each other. Then, Timaya and Empress were so smitten, it was as if they could do no wrong. But how wrong we were or is it, they were?  Because before the love could find a place to nest time soon put it to shame as the couple not only went their separate ways, they also went for each other’s jugular. Empress and Timaya showed us in graphic details how soon love could become hate. How  one’s honey in one’s tea could be a vinegar in one’s vine. Then, they started tearing each other to pieces. The sweet words they shared became venom, with which one wanted to poison the other. Obviously crushed, Timaya was the first to show his distaste in public, saying he regretted dating the actress. But the beautiful actress would not have any of that as she fired back that her mother would have been the saddest woman in  the world if...

Image
Spanish police say they have arrested one of Colombia’s most wanted men, Hernan Alonso Villa, known as “el Raton” (The Mouse). He is suspected of being head of a gang of 200 people linked to international drug trafficking and extortion. Hernan Alonso Villa was arrested on a road outside Alicante in southern Spain after a month-long tracking operation. He is considered one of the main leaders of the “Oficina de Envigado” group which operates around Medellin. The Oficina (Office) is responsible for exporting cocaine to Spain, the United States and Holland, a police statement said. The suspect was carrying 40,000 euros ($54,000; £31,600) in cash when he was arrested, under a Colombian extradition warrant, police said. The Oficina was connected to the 1980s Medellin Cartel led by infamous drug lord, Pablo Escobar. Colombian newspaper reports say it has grown in size since then and now has relations with members of the prominent Mexican Sinaloa Cartel. It is suspected of being complicit...

Russian shares tumble after Ukraine jet crash

Image
Russian markets took a further tumble on Friday after the crash of a Malaysian plane in rebel-held east Ukraine dramatically raised tensions between the Kremlin and the West. The disaster which claimed the lives of all 298 people on board came after Washington and Brussels introduced biting new sanctions against Moscow on Thursday, with the United States targeting companies in the military, energy and finance sectors. “The plane catastrophe was a real shock for those investors who had started to believe that it was all about de-escalation,” said Slava Smolyaninov, chief strategist at Uralsib Capital. “For the market, it really was a bad confluence of events with the US sanctions in the morning and the plane tragedy in the evening. Unsurprisingly, investors are taking money off the table in view of higher risks,” he told AFP in emailed comments. In Moscow, the ruble-denominated Micex stock index fell by 1.67 percent in early trading, and the dollar-based RTS index was down 2.23 perc...

Staff members rape six-year-old girl in India school

Image
A six-year-old schoolgirl has been allegedly raped by two staff members at a prominent school in the southern Indian city of Bangalore, police say. The child was assaulted on 2 July, but her parents discovered it only a few days ago after she complained of stomach ache and was taken to hospital. Meanwhile, hundreds of parents have protested outside the school, pulling down its gates and shouting slogans. Police have registered a case, but they are yet to make any arrests. The BBC’s Andrew North in Delhi says it’s the latest in a series of sexual assault cases that have made headlines in India. The new Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised a zero tolerance approach on crimes against women, but violence and discrimination against women in remain deeply entrenched in society. The girl was allegedly raped by a security guard and a gym teacher, but as there are multiple guards and gym instructors in the school, police say they are trying to identify the guilty, BBC Hindi’s Imran Qures...

Keep ethno-religious sentiment away from politics – Alkali

Image
Alkali Prof. Rufai Alkali, Special Adviser (SA) to the President on Political Matters, has urged politicians not to campaign along religious line in order to get voters’ support. He said this in Abuja on Tuesday, at a Political Summit organised by Southern and Northern Amalgamated Support for Predsident Goodluck Jonathan. According to Alkali, ethnic and religious differences should not be seen as basis for voting a candidate into office and nobody should see them as tools for campaigning for vote. “Politicians should campaign based on candidates’ integrity and achievements so that the nation would continue to develop. “Nigeria is a secular state and for that reason, it will not be fair for anyone to campaign along religious or ethnic line for elective offices”, Alkali said. He, therefore, commended President Jonathan for creating atmosphere conducive for opposition to thrive in the political landscape of the country. He also urged the group members and the electorate in general t...

Wole Soyinka: Our Lion And Our Jewel By Bayo Oluwasanmi

Image
In 1965, he seized the Western Nigeria Broadcasting Service (WNBS) studio and broadcast a demand for the cancellation of the Western Nigeria regional elections. In 1967 during the Nigerian Civil War, he was arrested by the federal government of General Yakubu Gowon and put in solitary confinement for two years. During the regime of General Sani Abacha (1993-98), W.S. escaped from Nigeria via the “NADECO Route” on a motorbike. Abacha proclaimed a death sentence against him in absentia. Eightieth birthday is a special occasion and ideal opportunity to tell Wole Soyinka the first African to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, how much he means to us. When people think of Wole Soyinka, it’s probably as the author of the powerful autobiographical work, The Man Died (1971), a collection of notes from prison. But more than that, W.S. as fondly known in literary circles, is identified around the world as the recusant specialist who refused to submit to madmen that run and ruin Nigeria ...

World Cup tickets: Ray Whelan ‘flees arrest’

Image
Ray Whelan Ray Whelan, head of Fifa partner Match Hospitality, has fled to escape arrest in Rio over alleged illegal World Cup ticket sales, Brazilian police say. Police chief Fabio Barucke said Mr Whelan was officially considered a fugitive from justice. Earlier on Thursday, a judge accepted an indictment for Mr Whelan – who is British – and 11 others. An international gang is said to have earned some $90m (£52m) per tournament and may have acted at four World Cups. The gang is believed to have been making money by acquiring and illegally selling on VIP tickets and hospitality passes. Mr Whelan, 64, was first detained on Monday at the exclusive Copacabana Palace hotel in Rio de Janeiro and released after questioning. The other 11 suspects were arrested last week. In a statement after his arrest, Match Hospitality denied any wrongdoing by Mr Whelan, and said he would co-operate with any investigation. However, police in Rio said they went to Mr Whelan’s room in the Copacaban...

Soyinka: The Man Lived By Soyombo Opeyemi

Image
Prof. Wole Soyinka Language, the source of Wole Soyinka’s fame; the reason also for his alienation by the average reader. The Nobel Laureate is a man of complex locution. Besides his political forays, the density and immensity of his literature is perhaps the major thing that trademarks him. The fact is, there can be no indolent or perfunctory reading of Wole Soyinka; his literary rampart is impregnable. You peruse him; then the fortress can give way. However, the language employed by the playwright in his prison memoir is in a class of its own. Set in the Civil War Nigeria, The Man Died is a riveting account of the atrocities perpetrated by the military regime against the civil populace, in which the author was also a major victim - of solitary confinement without trial for fifteen gruelling months. The abuses fill you with horrors: the flogging syndrome, detention and imprisonment without trial, killing, torture as pastime; sadism and crushing of the civic will; the climate of...

India set to present federal budget

Image
Measures aimed at reviving India’s slowing economy are set to be announced by the country’s new government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in its federal budget on Thursday. India’s economy has slowed markedly, growing by 4.7 per cent in the 2013-14 financial year which marked the second year of sub-5 per cent growth. Modi’s government has promised reforms aimed at creating jobs. The budget is also expected to contain measures designed to slow inflation. The government has also spoken about its plans to introduce a general sales tax, simplify taxation, encourage foreign investment and speed up approvals for major business projects. A government survey, published on Wednesday, said the country’s fiscal situation was worse than it appeared. The annual government Economic Survey on India’s economy heightened speculation that Thursday’s budget will give a higher, more realistic fiscal deficit target for the current financial year than the 4.1 per cent of gross domestic product ...

The accused, John Ogunsola, 40, who resides at 61, Olatunde St., Oke Ira, Ogba, Lagos, is standing trial on a count. He, however, pleaded not guilty. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Yewande Aje-Afunwa, who noted that the offence could attract life imprisonment, ordered that Ogunsola should also provide two sureties in like sum. “The sureties must own residential property in Lagos State, be recognised community or religious leaders. They must show evidence of tax payment and gainful employment,” she directed. The chief magistrate added that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused. She adjourned the case to July 7 for hearing. Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Peter Nwangwu, told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 27 at his residence.
