False dawn in railway sector A road trip across Nigeria today is an exercise in delays and anguish. Not only are the roads decrepit, an endless caravan of trailers and trucks hauling petroleum products and other goods from one point to the other compounds the chaos around the country. Countless trucks park illegally on the kerb, creating a disorderly spectacle. Ordinarily, most of these goods should be ferried by rail. But in the past 20 years or so, the rail system has broken down. Consequently, Nigerians now move goods by road. This is an anomaly. The trucks have caused untold hardship to road users: they are slow in speed, thereby clogging the roads; and their weights destroy the roads. The Corps-Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Osita Chidoka, recently warned, “As of last year, 5,000 trucks plied our roads daily to move about 150 million litres of fuel we consumed. If the … economy grows as it’s being projected, this means that Nigeria would require 20,000 trucks daily...

Escape from a lynch mob: Story of 64-year-old suspected rapist BUT for the timely intervention of men of the Ebonyi State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, a suspected serial rapist, Mr. Peter Edigbo, 64, would have been lynched by members of Agbaenyim community in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State last weekend. The suspect was later arrested by the Command’s division in Izzi Local Government Area for allegedly raping a six-year-old girl, Miss Nkwegu Chinwe, at midnight when the victim was asleep in her house. Vanguard Metro, VM, gathered that the suspect sneaked into the little girl’s room and allegedly forcefully had carnal knowledge of his victim. FG, private sector partner to revitalise oil palm industry The Federal Government has promised to work with stakeholders in the oil palm value chain to grow the sub-sector in line with its Industrial Revolution Plan. Mr Olusegun Aganga, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, made the promise at a meeting with the Plantation Owners Forum of Nigeria in Abuja. Others associations at the meeting were the National Palm Produce Association of Nigeria and Vegetable and Edible Oil Processors Association of Nigeria. Pastor rapes woman in church during  ‘spiritual bath’ A 46-year-old Pastor, Olamide Sobowale, of Glory Church of Christ Aladura, Oke-Itoku, Abeokuta, Ogun State,  has been ordered to be remanded in prison for allegedly raping a woman while bathing in his church backyard. Pastor Sobowale, who  was arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, yesterday, was accused of  raping one Dupe Makinde, 30, who lives in Isaje, Abeokuta, while taking a spiritual bath  allegedly  recommended by the pastor. The prosecuting counsel, Paul Etusi, told the court that the accused grabbed the complainant while she was in  a bathroom within the church premises and raped her. Etusi said the complainant had already put the  soap on her face as she began bathing when the pastor suddenly entered the bathroom, grabbed and  raped her with soap on her face.
