FG, private sector partner to revitalise oil palm industry


The Federal Government has promised to work with stakeholders in the oil palm value chain to grow the sub-sector in line with its Industrial Revolution Plan. Mr Olusegun Aganga, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, made the promise at a meeting with the Plantation Owners Forum of Nigeria in Abuja.
Others associations at the meeting were the National Palm Produce Association of Nigeria and Vegetable and Edible Oil Processors Association of Nigeria. Aganga said that the ministry would partner all the stakeholders in the industry to develop holistic and integrated policy that would fast-track the growth of the sector.
“No nation has developed from being a poor to a rich nation by relying heavily on producing and exporting its raw materials without a vibrant and robust industrial base and services sector. Our country is blessed with abundant human and natural resources to become a great nation especially given the ongoing transformation and reforms being carried out by President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.
“In order to diversify and grow our economy through industrialisation we have already developed and begun the implementation of the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan”.


Aganga said the plan had identified strategic areas where Nigeria had comparative advantage such as agri-business. He said that that the NIRP placed high premium in converting raw materials into finished products through value addition.
The minister said the ministry was partnering the manufacturing sector to remove barriers to increased productivity in order to increase the capacity utilisation of the real sector for job and wealth creation.
“We are committed to providing a conducive environment to support the growth and development of the industrial sector.
The meeting with the coalition of stakeholders in the oil palm industry value chain afforded us the opportunity to appraise the problems militating against achieving the full potential of the sector. We are ready to partner all the stakeholders to resolve the issues raised,” he assured.
Mr Fatai Afolabi, the Executive Secretary, Plantation Owners Forum of Nigeria, had earlier solicited for the assistance of the ministry in industrialising the sector.
Afolabi said that stakeholders in the industry were ready to key into the Industrial Revolution Plan of the Federal Government in order to move the sector forward.
“For the past 20 years, this is the first time for us to get the opportunity of meeting a sitting minister in charge of industry despite all our efforts.

Housewife who allegedly beat girl, 3, to death for defecating on herself is charged for murder


A 21-year-old woman, Rebecca Bassey, was arrested and charged to an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday, over the alleged murder of a 3-year-old girl.According to the Prosecutor, Frank Inah, Bassey had reportedly committed the crime on July 22 at about 4.00 p.m at her residence,  No.158, Power Line St. Ijaye, Ojokoro, Lagos state.Insp. Inah said the father of the victim had accommodation problems and begged his younger brother who is the husband of the suspect, to allow two of his children including the deceased to live with them.The Magistrate,  Mr A.O. Akomolafe, remanded the accused, pending the outcome of an advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.‘’The deceased took ill, vomiting and defecating on herself, the mess irritated the accused and she beat her up. In the process  of the beating, the deceased hit her head on a chair and started bleeding in the nose.‘’The child was immediately rushed to a nearby general hospital and was later transferred to LUTH where she was confirmed dead on July 23.‘’One  Mrs Kudirat Ogunseye, a woman leader at Jankara area of Ijaiye Ojokoro, reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested,’’ Inah stated.The prosecutor said  that the offence contravened section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.The Defence Counsel,  Mr Olabisi Coalhole, pleaded with the court to grant bail to the accused, arguing that it was a case of domestic accident and not murder as presented by the prosecutor.No plea was taken and the magistrate adjourned the case till Oct 2 for mention.

Putin Warns US over Syria Strike

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned America and its allies against taking one-sided action in Syria.    He said any military strikes without UN approval would be "an aggression".    US President Barack Obama has called for punitive action in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack reports the BBC.    Putin said Russia did not rule out supporting a UN Security Council resolution authorising force, if it was proved "beyond doubt" that the Syrian government used chemical weapons.    On Tuesday evening, members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee agreed on a draft resolution backing the use of US military force.    The measure, to be voted on next week, sets a time limit of 60 days on any operation.    According to the draft resolution, the operation would be restricted to a "limited and tailored use of the United States Armed Forces against Syria", and ban the use of any ground forces.   The US has put the death toll from the alleged chemical attack on the outskirts of Damascus on 21 August at 1,429, though other countries and organisations have given lower figures.   Putin was speaking ahead of the G20 summit in St Petersburg, which opens on Thursday and is supposed to concentrate on the global economy, but now looks likely to be dominated by the Syrian crisis.    In a wide-ranging interview with The Associated Press and Russia's state Channel 1 television, Putin said it was "ludicrous'' that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, an ally of Russia, would use chemical weapons at a time when it was gaining ground against the rebels.    "If there is evidence that chemical weapons were used, and by the regular army... then this evidence must be presented to the UN Security Council. And it must be convincing," Putin said.    But he added that Russia would "be ready to act in the most decisive and serious way"

‘Mu’azu’s peace talks with Obasanjo failed’

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo There are strong indications that efforts by the Peoples Democratic Party to make former President Olusegun Obasanjo to have a rethink  on his decision to stay away from the party’s activities  have failed.  Investigations on Thursday showed that Obasanjo insisted when the new PDP National Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu visited him on January 26, that Jonathan  must  honour his alleged promise in 2011 not to contest the 2015 presidential election.
