Minister Pleads With Nigerians Over Eagles’ Crash

Dr. Danagogo

The failure of the Super Eagles to go beyond the round of 16 at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Brazil following their 0-2 loss to France has elicited a lot of reactions from Nigerians.
Though some of have been complimentary, a lot more have been caustic as they condemned the players and Head Coach, Stephen Kashi whom they want removed by the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF.
However, Sports Minister and Chairman, National Sports Commission (NSC) Dr. Tammy Danagogo has called on Nigerians not to be too harsh on the team and coaches for the disappointment.
While agreeing that the Super Eagles had all it takes to progress in the competition, Dr. Danagogo reminded Nigerians that the injuries suffered by key members of the team did not help their cause in the competition.
“Nigerians were expectant and the Eagles also had all it takes to have progressed, but the injuries suffered by some key members of the team did not help their cause at all,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to take consolation from the fact that the Eagles improved from their performance at the past two editions they attended in 2002 and 2010 where they failed to go beyond the first round to be among the two African teams that qualified for the knock-out stage.
“Those who are angry over the team’s failure to progress have the right to do so but I want to appeal to them to forgive the team. We should be proud because they were not disgraced.  They also improved from their first round performance of 2002 and 2010”, he stressed.
He particularly commended the President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for always supporting the team and for helping resolve the rift that cropped up during their stay in Brazil. He also thanked the Senate President, David Mark for personally visiting
the team and boosting their morale.
“We are lucky to have a Sports-loving President and I must
thank Mr. President for personally speaking to the team which helped resolve
the rift they had in Camp.  I also
commend the effort of the Senate President for visiting the team in Brazil and
boosting their morale to make the modest achievement of reaching the second
round after 16 years” he said.
