MAPOLY Releases 2014/2015 School Fees

Image
Barely a week before resumption for the 2014/2015 session, the management of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, Abeokuta has released the new school fees regime for the new session. The new fees regime shows a difference from the promise made by the Ogun State governor, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun to slash the tuition fees of all Ogun-Owned tertiary institutions by 61%. It can be recalled that the state governor promised students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, will be paying as low N40,000 for Higher National Diploma (HND), while National Diploma (ND) students will enjoy a reduction of N22,300, a reduction of 31.1 and 9.6 per cent respectively. However, the new fees regime has abolished the indigene/non-indigene dichotomy, as all students offering the same course and the same level would pay same fees. Meanwhile, some students of the polytechnic have taken to social media to voice their displeasure over the new fees regime as they described the governor as unreliable. ...

Shrien Dewani pleads not guilty at honeymoon murder trial in South Africa

Image
British millionaire Shrien Dewani on Monday pleaded not guilty to charges of murdering his young bride while on honeymoon in Cape Town as his long-awaited trial got under way. Speaking from the dock, Dewani, dressed in a dark suit and tie, glanced nervously around court and said he was "not guilty" of charges of murder, kidnapping and obstructing justice. The prosecution is expected to argue that Dewani is a gay man who was so desperate to escape an arranged marriage that he hired hitmen to kill his bride on their honeymoon. In a statement read by defence layer Francois van Zyl, Dewani admitted he was bisexual, but said he was "instantly physically attracted" to Swedish-born bride Anni (nee Hindocha), who was shot dead on November 13, 2010, aged 28. "I've had sexual interaction with both males and females. I consider myself bisexual," Dewani's statement said. Businessman Dewani finally appeared in court after losing a three-year extradi...

Hikers Found on Japanese Volcano Are Feared Dead

Image
At least 31 hikers were found unconscious and feared to be dead near the peak of a volcano in central Japan on Sunday, a day after it suddenly erupted, a police spokesman said. The danger of another eruption and of a release of toxic gases made it impossible to bring most of them down, he said. The spokesman, Naofumi Niyairi, said rescuers had found the fallen hikers near the top of Mount Ontake, a 10,062- foot volcano that erupted in a spectacular geyser of ash on Saturday, when the mountain was busy with climbers who had gone to see the first signs of autumn. Television images showed that the ash had blanketed the mountain’s upper slopes, turning them into a gray, lifeless moonscape. Many of the hikers were found covered in ash, and perfunctory examinations showed their hearts and lungs had stopped, Mr. Niyairi said. He said rescuers were carrying four of the fallen climbers down the mountain, but the rest had to be left behind, as the mountain continued to spew smoke on Sunday...

Nasri drops retirement hint

Image
Samir Nasri has dropped a big hint that he will never play for France again. He says playing for his country makes him unhappy, reports Sky Sports. The Manchester City midfielder was controversially left out of France’s World Cup squad by manager Didier Deschamps. Nasri says he will make an announcement about his international future. That announcement will almost certainly mark the end of his international career. “I’ve made the decision,” he said. “I made it a while ago but I will announce it when the time is right. “It’s not something you can just announce on Twitter. I have to sit down and do a full interview and just say it. I will do it when the time is right. It’s not something you can just announce on Twitter. I have to sit down and do a full interview and just say it. I will do it when the time is right.” Nasri started playing for France seven years ago. He has 41 caps and has scored five times for his country. “Even before the summer, during Euro 2012 I had a lot going...

McDonald's to resume full menu in Beijing, Guangzhou

Image
HONG KONG: McDonald’s Corp (MCD.N), which has over 2,000 restaurants in China, will restore its full menu in some Chinese cities this week, a fortnight after a food safety scandal forced the company to halt the sale of staples such as Big Macs and Spicy McWings, Reuters reported on Monday. The world’s biggest restaurant chain will resume full menus in Beijing and Guangzhou this week, while menus in Shanghai will return to normal this month, a company spokeswoman in China told Reuters on Monday. She said some other cities had also resumed full menus, but declined to give more details. McDonald’s last month cut ties with Shanghai Husi Food, a unit of US-based OSI Group LLC, after a television report triggered investigations into improper meat-handling procedures at Shanghai Husi’s factory. McDonald’s decision led to meat shortages at many of its restaurants in China. The scandal highlights the challenges facing inspectors in China’s fast-growing and sprawling food industry. China is ...

Telecoms Games: Wins for Airtel, Etisalat

Image
Match Day 2 of the 2014 Nigeria Telecoms Games lived up to the pre-fixture hype of an entertaining keen contest with each of the two fixtures producing a hat trick, a brace and quality excitement. Airtel and Etisalat were the winners on the day in the two fixtures that pitched Airtel against Alcatel Lucent and Etisalat against their greatest rival, MTN. Airtel Nigeria began the season boasting of a mission to conquer all and they seem to be matching those words with performance as they won their straight two games on Saturday in style.  Wale Bakare turned out the man of the day with a hat trick that was the first by any player this season and which has placed him atop the goal scorer’s chart. In the clash with Alcatel, Olugbenga Yinka opened scoring for Airtel on 11 minutes and Bakare completed his hat trick within a space of 18 minutes starting from the 18th minute when he netted the first of the three and scoring the rest on 25th and 36th minutes of the game.  ...

Election: ‘Stomach infrastructure’ spreads to Osun

Image
Aregbesola and Omisore Politicians from political parties in Osun State are struggling to outdo one another in their bid to woo voters and ensure victory for their candidates in the governorship election coming up on   August 9. The leading political parties in the state are not limiting their campaign strategies to pasting posters and what they say at campaign rallies alone. Specifically, the Peoples Democratic Party and the ruling All Progressives Congress, for instance, have started distributing various items like rice, kerosene, noodles, salt, matches and other items to the electorate few days away from the D-Day. Although both the PDP and the APC shared food items, especially rice, before the governorship election in Ekiti State on June 21, Ayo Fayose of the PDP eventually won with a landslide. The winner had suffered more criticism for allegedly buying voters with the large volume of rice he shared – a development that has been termed ‘stomach infrastructure.’ Observe...

India doctors remove 232 teeth from boy’s mouth

Image
Doctors in India have extracted 232 teeth from the mouth of a 17-year-old boy in a seven-hour operation. Ashik Gavai was brought in with a swelling in his right jaw, Dr Sunanda Dhiware, head of Mumbai’s JJ Hospital’s dental department, told the BBC. The teenager had been suffering for 18 months and travelled to the city from his village after local doctors failed to identify the cause of the problem. Doctors have described his condition as “very rare” and “a world record”. “Ashik’s malaise was diagnosed as a complex composite odontoma where a single gum forms lots of teeth. It’s a sort of benign tumour,” Dr Dhiware said. “At first, we couldn’t cut it out so we had to use the basic chisel and hammer to take it out. “Once we opened it, little pearl-like teeth started coming out, one-by-one. Initially, we were collecting them, they were really like small white pearls. But then we started to get tired. We counted 232 teeth,” she added. The surgery, conducted on Monday, involved two sur...

CAR factions announce ceasefire

Image
Representatives from the Seleka (l) and the anti-Balaka signed the agreement Rival armed groups in the Central African Republic have signed a ceasefire agreement aimed at ending over a year of religious conflict. The agreement was signed in Congo between Muslim Seleka rebels and the Christian anti-Balaka militia. As part of the deal, the Seleka dropped their demand for CAR’s partition. Thousands of people have been killed and almost a quarter of the country’s 4.6 million inhabitants have been forced from their homes. Muslims have been forced to flee the capital city and most of the west of the country, in what rights groups described as ethnic cleansing. Both sides have been accused of war crimes such as torture and unlawful killing. The negotiations began in the Congolese capital of Brazzaville on Monday. “We have signed this ceasefire agreement today in front of everyone. Our commitment is firm and irreversible” said Mohamed Moussa Dhaffane, who headed the Seleka delegation. Pa...

Nasarawa Assembly asks CJ to set up imeachment panel

Image
Governor Umaru Al-Makura. The Nasarawa State House of Assembly on Wednesday asked the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Suleiman Dikko, to constitute a seven-man panel to probe “alleged gross misconduct” leveled against Governor Umaru Al-Makura. The legislature took the decision during plenary on Wednesday which lasted for about 20 minutes. Majority Leader of the House, Mr Godiya Akwashiki (PDP- Udege/Loko) moved the motion for the setting up of the probe panel in line with the provision of the 1999 constitution as amended. The motion was later seconded by Mr Mohammed Baba-Ibaku (PDP- Nasarawa Eggon West). The Speaker, Alhaji Musa Ahmed, put the motion to vote and 20 of the 24 members voted in favour, while the All Progressives Congress  lawmakers voted against the motion. The assembly, therefore, directed the Clerk, Mr Ego Maikeffi, to communicate the decision to the Chief Judge, saying that the CJ has one week to constitute the panel. Security operatives harass Ezekwesili at airport

Image
Oby Ezekwesili Operatives of the Department of State Security this morning seized the international passport of the Coordinator of the BringBackOurGirls group and former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. Ezekwesili was on her way to London when her passport was confiscated by the security operatives and she was prevented from boarding her flight. Her passport was however released to her about 30 minutes later and the BBOG campaigner was allowed to board the plane. A BBOG spokesperson, Rotimi Olawale, confirmed to our correspondent that Ezekwesili’s traveling document was seized by security operatives and later released to her. He said, “Oby’s passport was seized by security operatives at the Nnamdi International Airport, Abuja for about 30 minutes and she was prevented from boarding her plane, but she has now been released and she is on her way to London for her engagement.” Ezekwesili later tweeted to her followers that sh...

Australia teenager behind Iraq blast

Image
Australia says a man who killed himself and several other people in a suicide attack in Iraq last week was an 18-year-old from Melbourne. The attack took place in a market near a Baghdad mosque on Thursday. The man detonated explosives in a suicide vest, killing at least three other people and injuring dozens more. The Islamic State militant group, in an affiliated Twitter feed, said it was behind the attack and named the man as Abu Bakr al-Australi. Australia’s Attorney-General George Brandis, in a statement, said the news was a “disturbing development”. “The government deplores the violent actions being undertaken by ISIL and other extremist groups in Iraq and Syria, and is deeply concerned about the involvement of Australians in these activities.” The involvement of Australians posed “a significant domestic security threat to Australia when those involved return home and seek to pursue violence here”. The man was the second Australian suicide bomber in the Iraq and Syria conflic...

Timaya: Empress Njamah at war again?

Image
Timaya Once, Bayelsa State-born music artiste, Timaya and actress Empress Njamah were talk of the town on account of the love they presumably had for each other. Then, Timaya and Empress were so smitten, it was as if they could do no wrong. But how wrong we were or is it, they were?  Because before the love could find a place to nest time soon put it to shame as the couple not only went their separate ways, they also went for each other’s jugular. Empress and Timaya showed us in graphic details how soon love could become hate. How  one’s honey in one’s tea could be a vinegar in one’s vine. Then, they started tearing each other to pieces. The sweet words they shared became venom, with which one wanted to poison the other. Obviously crushed, Timaya was the first to show his distaste in public, saying he regretted dating the actress. But the beautiful actress would not have any of that as she fired back that her mother would have been the saddest woman in  the world if...

Spanish police arrest ‘Colombian drug lord el Raton'

Image
Spanish police say they have arrested one of Colombia’s most wanted men, Hernan Alonso Villa, known as “el Raton” (The Mouse). He is suspected of being head of a gang of 200 people linked to international drug trafficking and extortion. Hernan Alonso Villa was arrested on a road outside Alicante in southern Spain after a month-long tracking operation. He is considered one of the main leaders of the “Oficina de Envigado” group which operates around Medellin. The Oficina (Office) is responsible for exporting cocaine to Spain, the United States and Holland, a police statement said. The suspect was carrying 40,000 euros ($54,000; £31,600) in cash when he was arrested, under a Colombian extradition warrant, police said. The Oficina was connected to the 1980s Medellin Cartel led by infamous drug lord, Pablo Escobar. Colombian newspaper reports say it has grown in size since then and now has relations with members of the prominent Mexican Sinaloa Cartel. It is suspected of being complicit...

Russian shares tumble after Ukraine jet crash

Image
Russian markets took a further tumble on Friday after the crash of a Malaysian plane in rebel-held east Ukraine dramatically raised tensions between the Kremlin and the West. The disaster which claimed the lives of all 298 people on board came after Washington and Brussels introduced biting new sanctions against Moscow on Thursday, with the United States targeting companies in the military, energy and finance sectors. “The plane catastrophe was a real shock for those investors who had started to believe that it was all about de-escalation,” said Slava Smolyaninov, chief strategist at Uralsib Capital. “For the market, it really was a bad confluence of events with the US sanctions in the morning and the plane tragedy in the evening. Unsurprisingly, investors are taking money off the table in view of higher risks,” he told AFP in emailed comments. In Moscow, the ruble-denominated Micex stock index fell by 1.67 percent in early trading, and the dollar-based RTS index was down 2.23 perc...

The gunmen had taken over a half-completed building in an assault that included explosives, rocket-propelled grenades and machine-gun fire, police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai said. The building where the firefight took place was located in a settlement a few hundred meters outside the grounds of the airport. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the militant group was targeting the military side of the airport. The assault temporarily halted operations on the civilian side of the facility. There were no casualties among Afghan security forces or civilians, the ministry said. Staff members rape six-year-old girl in India school

Image
A six-year-old schoolgirl has been allegedly raped by two staff members at a prominent school in the southern Indian city of Bangalore, police say. The child was assaulted on 2 July, but her parents discovered it only a few days ago after she complained of stomach ache and was taken to hospital. Meanwhile, hundreds of parents have protested outside the school, pulling down its gates and shouting slogans. Police have registered a case, but they are yet to make any arrests. The BBC’s Andrew North in Delhi says it’s the latest in a series of sexual assault cases that have made headlines in India. The new Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised a zero tolerance approach on crimes against women, but violence and discrimination against women in remain deeply entrenched in society. The girl was allegedly raped by a security guard and a gym teacher, but as there are multiple guards and gym instructors in the school, police say they are trying to identify the guilty, BBC Hindi’s Imran Qures...

Keep ethno-religious sentiment away from politics – Alkali

Image
Alkali Prof. Rufai Alkali, Special Adviser (SA) to the President on Political Matters, has urged politicians not to campaign along religious line in order to get voters’ support. He said this in Abuja on Tuesday, at a Political Summit organised by Southern and Northern Amalgamated Support for Predsident Goodluck Jonathan. According to Alkali, ethnic and religious differences should not be seen as basis for voting a candidate into office and nobody should see them as tools for campaigning for vote. “Politicians should campaign based on candidates’ integrity and achievements so that the nation would continue to develop. “Nigeria is a secular state and for that reason, it will not be fair for anyone to campaign along religious or ethnic line for elective offices”, Alkali said. He, therefore, commended President Jonathan for creating atmosphere conducive for opposition to thrive in the political landscape of the country. He also urged the group members and the electorate in general t...
