Wiper now picks Mutula Junior for Makueni poll
The Coalition for Reform and Democracy has unveiled Mutula Kilonzo Juniour as the candidate that will fly the party’s flag in the Makueni Senatorial by-election set for July 26.
David Musila the party chairman for Wiper party said that in selecting, Mutula Junior to vie for the seat, the party wants to ensure it retains the Makueni senate seat.
Speaking at the press conference to unveil Mutula Junior at the Serena Hotel, Nairobi, former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka said that despite the attempts to bar Kethi from representing the party, Wiper was “not short of Mutulas.”
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga who was also at the briefing said that he was disappointed by the High Court ruling made earlier today, but that Mutula Junior is a capable replacement for Kethi and by extension of the late Mutula Kilonzo.
Mutula Junior while accepting the nomination, said that he is not going into politics, but that he is going to provide leadership. Mutula Junior who has been nominated by the Wiper party is a replacement for the former candidate and his sister Kethi Kilonzo, whose candidature was revoked by the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission on Friday last week.
The electoral commission reversed the clearance of Kethi after its Dispute Resolutions Commission established that she was not duly registered and therefore not eligible to participate in the mini poll.
Kethi and the Wiper party appealed the decision with the High Court but the a three-judge bench constituted by Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga upheld the disputes commission’s ruling.
The Court however cleared the Wiper party to nominate another candidate in place of Kethi after having established that the party was not privy to her registration status with the IEBC.
Mutula Junior will now contest the Makueni Senatorial seat against former Kilome legislator Harun Mwau, NARC’s Philip Kaloki, Jane Wavinya Muoka of Labour Party of Kenya and Urbanus Muthoka, an independent candidate.
