Francisco Jose Garzon, who has previously boasted on Facebook of his 124mph speeds, said: “I hope there are no dead because they would fall on my conscience”
The driver of the high-speed train which crashed and killed 80 in Spain warned he was coming off a bend at 118mph – over twice the speed limit.
Realising the horror about to unfold, the 52-year-old, with 30 years’ experience, made a desperate call to bosses and said: “I’m going at 190kmh (118mph), I’m going to derail.”
In a second frantic call after the accident, he explained that he was trapped in the cabin and added: “I hope there are no dead because they would fall on my conscience.”
After he was freed, Francisco Jose Garzon sobbed as he wandered around the carnage in shock saying: “I’ve derailed. What am I going to do? What am I going to do?”
The speed limit at the crash bend is 49mph.
Last night Mr Garzon, who has previously boasted on Facebook of his 124mph speeds, was arrested by police after the tragedy left dozens dead and 30 critically injured, including children.
