The Igbo giant strides against all odds

Image
All ethnic groups in Nigeria had some clans who were suspected of cannibalism. I have no first hand knowledge of this. But Enugu, Ngwo, Abakaliki, some parts of Abia near Umuahia, and near Obowu  in Imo State were similarly suspected. If it was so, it did not last long because the Criminal Investigation Division (CID), and the District Officers (DOs) and native administration soon put a stop to it, as they did among some Ijaws, like the Okrika, who were similarly suspected. The British Government had found that the “ Indirect Rule ” system did not work in the East, as it had done in the North and the West, mainly because the later had kingship institutions. Where these institutions existed, it was easy for the British to rule through the District Officer (DO) who passed on directives to the  Obas, Chiefs, Bales, Emirs ,...

4,000-BOKO HARAM FIGHTERS NEGOTIATE SURRENDER AFTER BEING SURROUNDED

Image
About 6,000 Boko Haram fighters are encircled by soldiers from the Multi National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) around Madagali and Gulak and are negotiating a possible surrender as the noose tightens. Since 2009, Boko Haram has been waging a brutal war against Nigeria in a bid to establish an Islamic caliphate and over the last year has enjoyed substantial success on the battlefield. It scored military success, making sweeping gains across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States, capturing 13 local government areas. Alarmed by the raging success of the terrorists, Nigeria, Niger Republic, Chad and Cameroon decided to form the MNJTF that would enable to cooperate militarily. Over the last week, the MNJTF has enjoyed significant success, particularly with the arrival of battle-hardened Chadian troops who over the weekend reclaimed the town of Gamboru-Ngala near the Chad border with Nigeria. In a further setback for Boko Haram, Nigerian troops were able to repel two spirited attacks on the Borno...

Teenage Pregnancy: Anatomy of ‘the number one killer of girls!’

Image
About 16 million girls, aged 15 to 19, and some one million girls, under 15 years, give birth yearly in developing countries with Nigeria inclusive. Complications during child-birth and pregnancy are the second causes of death for 15-19 years old girls worldwide. For some adolescents, pregnancy and child bearing are planned and wanted, but for many others, they are not. Some girls do not know how to avoid being pregnant as sex education is still rare and elitist in many countries, including Nigeria. Again, many girls are ignorant, poor or ashamed to seek contraception services. Nigerian girls easily give to sex overtures from men, unable to refuse unwanted sex or resist coerced sex which is often unprotected. There are million s of unsafe abortions among teenage girls which parents don’t know about or some could be collaborators in attempts to protect the future of the girls. Research has shown that in developing countries, babies born to mothers under 20 years of age face 50% high...

MAPOLY Releases 2014/2015 School Fees

Image
Barely a week before resumption for the 2014/2015 session, the management of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, Abeokuta has released the new school fees regime for the new session. The new fees regime shows a difference from the promise made by the Ogun State governor, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun to slash the tuition fees of all Ogun-Owned tertiary institutions by 61%. It can be recalled that the state governor promised students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, will be paying as low N40,000 for Higher National Diploma (HND), while National Diploma (ND) students will enjoy a reduction of N22,300, a reduction of 31.1 and 9.6 per cent respectively. However, the new fees regime has abolished the indigene/non-indigene dichotomy, as all students offering the same course and the same level would pay same fees. Meanwhile, some students of the polytechnic have taken to social media to voice their displeasure over the new fees regime as they described the governor as unreliable. ...
